Qatar'2022  the most expensive World Cup finals in history ... beyond imagination 

The Qatar 2022 World Cup may be the most expensive tournament in football history, if the total costs are summed up, taking into account not only the cost of building new stadiums and refurbishing existing ones but also all the money spent on infrastructure.

The data collected by Statista showed that this year's World Cup in Qatar is the most expensive ever, by a stark difference, as the total cost of the astronomical tournament will be about $220 billion, which exceeds almost all the historical costs of the tournament.

Although this is a significant increase on the $4 billion for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the bulk of the spending is related to infrastructure costs that are part of the broader Qatar 2030 strategy. These include building an innovation center with hotels, an advanced metro network, stadiums, and airports.

According to estimates by a group of experts, as well as press reports, the cost of the World Cup in Qatar will exceed the threshold of two hundred billion dollars, and it may be much more than this figure.

It is worth noting that the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 was considered the most expensive, while the World Cup in Russia in 2018 ranked second, as the cost of the two tournaments together reached less than $ 15 billion.

In this, Dan Plumley, a football finance expert, and lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, said that when Qatar was awarded the right to host the 2022 World Cup in 2010, initial estimates indicated that the potential cost would reach $65 billion.

In an interview with DW, he added that some recent estimates indicate that it is likely that "the cost will exceed $ 200 billion," adding, "The Qatar World Cup will be the largest in terms of cost ever, although we do not even know the exact amount."

Why do estimates vary?

Estimates of the American "Front Office Sports" company, which specializes in the field of sports financial consulting, indicated that the cost of the World Cup in Qatar could reach $ 220 billion. On the other hand, Hassan Al-Thawadi, Secretary-General of the World Cup Organizing Committee, stated that the infrastructure costs that have been established in the Gulf country since it was granted the right to host the tournament will exceed $200 billion.

This discrepancy or inaccuracy in estimating the total cost is due to the fact that most of the money estimated in the billions spent by the Qatari government since 2010 was to create infrastructure not related to football, such as the construction of a new metro network in the capital, Doha, an international airport, new roads, as well as the construction of about a hundred hotels. The largest part of these investments comes within the framework of the implementation of the "Qatar National Vision 2030" project.
